What Is Online Training?
Online personal training has been around for a few years now, but it’s still relatively new and many people are not sure what to expect. For most people, personal training means showing up at the gym for your scheduled time slot and being led through a workout by your coach or trainer. In-person training is a great option for many people, but thanks to current technology, it is no longer the only option.
Here are some of the benefits of choosing online personal training:
You can pick the best trainer for you, regardless of physical location
Choosing the right trainer is important. Someone could be a great trainer, but not necessarily the right person for you or your specific goals. Until the last 5-10 years, your options for a personal trainer were limited by how far you were willing to drive for your training sessions. Thanks to online training, that is no longer the case. You now have the ability to choose the trainer who is the best fit for you.
Are you a busy parent looking to get more active to look and feel better? An amateur bodybuilder looking for a coach who can help you go pro? A high-school athlete looking to improve your performance in the off-season?
As you can imagine, these goals will require very different approaches to training. An elite powerlifting coach wouldn’t be the right choice for an expectant mother looking to prepare her body for for the stresses of pregnancy and delivery. While this is an extreme example, it demonstrates how helpful it is to not be limited to the trainers in your home town (or even your country).
Online coaching gives you the freedom to find the best choice for you, and the right trainer can make all the difference
You choose when and where to workout
Along with location, another obstacle can be finding a trainer whose schedule aligns with yours. Most people looking for a trainer have busy lives, and finding time to exercise can be a big challenge. This challenge can end up derailing your training before it begins if your schedule doesn’t fit the availability of your chosen trainer. Good trainers typically have limited availability, and popular time slots fill up fast.
A well-designed online training program allows you to work out at the time that works best for you, regardless of your trainer’s schedule. It also gives you the freedom to do your workouts wherever you want: at home, the gym next to your office, a local park. or even a hotel gym while you are on vacation or a business trip. Online training eliminates many of the obstacles that can make traditional in-person training impractical or impossible.
You save money, while still getting great results
Online training is a cost-effective way to reach your fitness goals. You will still receive a custom-made program designed for your goals, along with real coaching and accountability from your trainer, without paying your trainer’s hourly rate and covering gym overhead costs. By automating some parts of the process (I will discuss that more in the “how it works” section below), your trainer can spend their time working with you on the things that really impact your success.
So, How Does Online Personal Training Work?
Different coaches have different approaches for online training. The two biggest components of online training are program delivery and coach-client communication. These components may be handled with one integrated system, or with separate tools, depending on the trainer’s workflow. Options for program delivery range from sending workout programs with email or google drive, to software systems and apps designed specifically for program delivery and results tracking. Coach-client communication can be done within the training apps previously mentioned, or through email, text, or video chat software like zoom or skype. Coaches and trainers often use a combination of these along with additional tools for services like nutrition coaching or meal plans, if they offer those services.
What to Expect if You Do Online Training with Jeff Roberts Fitness
As you could see above, there are multiple ways to do online training. Here is how the process works if you choose to work with me for online training
Consultation
The coaching process begins with a free video consultation via Zoom. As we discussed above, choosing the right trainer or coach is important. This consultation lets you and I get to know each other a bit and make sure we are a good fit before making any commitment to work together.
The consultation is also the first step in creating your custom program. If we think of a workout program as a roadmap, the consultation is where we define our starting point and destination. We will begin by digging into your goals and getting a clear understanding of what you are looking to get out of your coaching program.
The Training App
Communication, program delivery, and results tracking all happen in our custom training app. After signing up for a program, you will receive an email to create an account and download the Jeff Roberts Fitness app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
